Nord VPN – Review

NordVPN is arguably the most popular VPN provider out there today. However, is that through the quality of product or some clever marketing? We’ve put NordVPN to the test to see if it really stands out amongst the array of other VPN providers out there.

What are the security features?

NordVPN has the robust features you’d come to expect from any VPN client such as 2048-bit encryption, a kill-switch, security protocols and P2P functionality.

When using VPNs cyber security should be front of mind and it clearly is with NordVPN. They have a cyber security feature which acts as an ad blocker and malware detector that ensures you can browse the web in peace.

NordVPN also has a double encryption feature that means if one of their servers is attacked, they will add another of layer of protection to it. It also has safe connection to the TOR anonymization network, and anti-DDoS servers.

Nord VPN comes with 256-AES-CBC with a 2048bit Diffie-Hellman key, which offers Perfect Forward Secrecy. On iOS and MacOS devices, you’ll be encrypted via an IKEv2/IPsec protocol; AES-256-GCM and a 3072bit DH key.

If we’re getting a bit technical here, rest assured it means that Nord VPN are committed to the latest and most secure security and encryption methods.

It has platforms and apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and certain routers. More impressively it allows you to have up to six connections at the same time, allowing you to use it across all your devices at one time.

How fast can it operate?

Speed used to be an issue with NordVPN. However, that is no longer the case. The company have expanded their network of servers and now have 3900 servers across 62 countries that you can choose from. This is an impressive increase considering they had 1,000 servers this time last year, which goes to show NordVPNs commitment to supplying users with the best possible experience.

User experience

The experience across all devices is similar with overlapping design features with a blue map as its focus. This simplified design makes it easy to select the server you want in the geographical region you need, it also has a list of servers you can choose from if the map is too much. Each server also comes with a host of analytics so you can decide if it’s the server for you.

However, it is worth noting that with the mobile app you cannot connect to as many servers as the computer platforms. Even with that there are still a few thousand servers to choose from.

How safe is my data?

NordVPN have their head offices located in Panama which means they can’t be forced to give user logs to anyone who may request it, such as the Government. This allows them to manoeuvre around data retention laws that are implemented in many countries across the globe. NordVPN have refused thousands of requests to deliver data on their users and in this regard should fill you with a sense of ease.

NordVPN also blocks WebRTC, which can leak information about your online activities.

Nice extras?

It’s one of the few VPNs that can successfully bypass Netflix’s VPN block and optimises its servers so that it can connect you to your desired Netflix. This also extends to the likes of Hulu, BBC, and many other content providers.

If you’re fairly new to the whole VPN experience it makes life easy for you as it will suggest the server you need depending on what you’re looking to do whether it be streaming film, browsing safely or uploading a torrent. You can also choose your own server from the easy to find drop-down menu.

Is it worth it?

NordVPN comes in three pricing tiers: $11.95 per month, $69.00 every year or $79.00 every two years. You can choose the payment method that suits you best as they accept PayPal, Credit/Debit cards and cryptocurrencies.

The pricing structure is similar to competitor VPNs. However, depending on your requirements you may want to shop around for one that offers something more suitable to your needs. For example, if you wish to just use a VPN for a week then this may not be the one for you but companies such as KeepSolid VPN do offer week long subscriptions.

NordVPN do offer a 30 day free trial, but be very wary of this as it only applies if the NordVPN service doesn’t work. Not enjoying the NordVPN service does not entitle you to a refund under their terms and conditions, so be careful before you purchase.

A simple interface with a robust core service makes this VPN worthy of attention. NordVPNs commitment to meeting the highest security standards and upgrading its servers means this is one of the best VPNs on the market today. In terms of bang for your buck, then Nord VPN is one of the best available VPNs you can choose.
